Saltend to Anchor Groundbreaking Zero Carbon Cluster Bid 17th March 2021

Saltend Chemicals Park, owned and operated by px Group, the leading energy services provider, is set to anchor the UK’s ground-breaking and very first zero carbon cluster, called Zero Carbon Humber, following today’s announcement that the ZCH bid has secured £75 million government funding alongside other key decarbonisation projects.
The public and private sector funded Zero Carbon Humber (ZCH) bid, which was submitted in October, has today received the green light from the Government to proceed. The ZCH bid will deploy carbon capture and transport infrastructure spanning the Humber region in one of the most nationally significant investments to help deliver the UK’s net zero ambitions.
Now the bid has been given the go-ahead, ZCH now moves into the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) stage.
Hydrogen to Humber Saltend
Saltend will be home to the bid’s anchor project, Hydrogen to Humber Saltend (H2H Saltend). H2H Saltend involves a new UK-first clean hydrogen plant that will produce hydrogen from natural gas in combination with carbon capture and storage (CCS). Initially the plant will allow industrial customers in the Saltend Chemicals Park to switch over to hydrogen fuelled energy and will reduce the amount of fossil fuels going into the Park’s gas-fired power plant, thus cutting emissions by nearly 900,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
H2H Saltend will in later phases have the potential to expand services to other industrial users in the Saltend Chemicals Park and across the Humber region. Locating the new plant in the Humber Estuary, commonly known as the UK’s Energy Estuary, puts the region in the forefront of the Government’s ambitious plan to establish at least one decarbonised industrial cluster by 2030 and ultimately the world first net zero cluster by 2040.

Geoff Holmes, CEO of px Group, continues:
“The project win is another fabulous result for Saltend, which is establishing itself as the UK’s new manufacturing powerhouse. We continue to go from strength to strength and this reinforces the Park as the go-to location for sustainable project investment.”
Patrick Pogue, Group Commercial Development Director at px Group, comments:
“Zero Carbon Humber with H2H Saltend provides a platform for decarbonising the energy and feedstocks at Saltend which will deliver one of the largest low carbon manufacturing sites in the UK. Today’s news is a considerable boost to the local economy.”
“Additionally Saltend has attracted significant investment in recent months from the likes of Pensana, which is a key player in the electric car and offshore wind market. We know that a key factor in Pensana choosing Saltend was the existing infrastructure, and the ability for companies to ‘plug and play’ on site: invest, launch and get up and running straight away.”
“With the Vivergo bioethanol plant restarting, this is a hat-trick of recent successes for Saltend Chemicals Park.”

The ZCH Partnership includes Associated British Ports, British Steel, Centrica Storage Ltd, Drax Group, Equinor, Mitsubishi Power, National Grid Ventures, px Group, SSE Thermal, Saltend Cogeneration Company Limited, Uniper, and the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC).
