Saltend Chemicals Park confirmed as site for H2H Saltend 25th January 2022

Saltend Chemicals Park, owned and operated by px Group, has been confirmed by Equinor as the location that will host the kickstarter project of the Zero Carbon Humber (ZCH) initiative.

Hydrogen to Humber Saltend (H2H Saltend) is a clean hydrogen plant that will produce hydrogen from natural gas in combination with carbon capture and storage (CCS).  Initially the plant will allow industrial customers in the Saltend Chemicals Park to switch over to hydrogen fueled energy and will reduce the amount of fossil fuels going into the Park’s gas-fired power plant, thus cutting emissions by nearly 900,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

This announcement follows that of March 2021, when it was revealed that the Zero Carbon Humber bid had secured government funding alongside other key decarbonisation projects.

Geoff Holmes, px Group CEO, says: “We are obviously delighted that another world-leading project is coming to Saltend and will join a host of world-class companies here.”

“H2H Saltend will directly reduce regional and national emissions and play a major part in the country’s journey to Net Zero. It will also provide a direct boost to local jobs and the local economy.”

Patrick Pogue, Group Commercial Development Director at px Group, adds: “It has been an absolutely brilliant year or so for Saltend as a site. From the confirmation of public funding early last year to today, it has been thoroughly enjoyable knowing that Saltend will play such a crucial role in this truly revolutionary project.”

“ZCH represents a true collaboration of expertise across numerous companies. It is this approach of working together and of sharing knowledge that will also be applied up and down the country if we are to reach our Net Zero goals.”

Zero Carbon Humber, led by Equinor, includes Associated British Ports, British Steel, Centrica Storage Ltd, Drax Group, Equinor, Mitsubishi Power, National Grid Ventures, px Group, SSE Thermal, Saltend Cogeneration Company Limited, Uniper, and the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC).
