Sam competes with world’s best in sidecar series
A Mechanical Maintenance Technician from Saltend Chemicals Park is taking his racing passion to the international stage as he competes in six different countries this year.
Sam Christie, 25, has worked at Saltend since he was just 16, we sponsor Sam and his 21-year-old brother, Adam. Sam is competing as a driver in the Sidecar World Championship, with Adam balancing the bike from the sidecar.
The first World Championship race in France saw the brothers finish sixth out of 20 , with further events to come in Hungary, Germany, Holland, Croatia and Spain.
Sam, who lives in Beverley, said:
“We did the whole of the World Championship last year and finished fifth out of 15 in the world.
“Each race has three 20-minute qualifying sessions, before competitors complete around 20 laps in each Gold race.
“If you fail to qualify within around 15 seconds of the leader, you’re disqualified from competing in the main race at each event. If you’re not fast enough, you go home.
“We’re less than two seconds off the leaders at the moment and they’re also British.”
Sam’s hobby is a family affair, as Adam’s twin brother, Tom, also competes and the brothers have followed in their father’s footsteps to pursue their passion, preparing the LCR-Yamaha sidecar chassis themselves and manufacturing many of the parts.
“I’m really grateful that px sponsors us. It’s a weight off my mind knowing my work supports my hobby.”
